What is The Learning Zoo?

The Learning Zoo offers residents of The Woodlands, Texas and surrounding communities the opportunity to experience wildlife, up-close and hands-on!

Our beautiful 1-acre zoo is located just outside The Woodlands, and is the perfect location for families to meet reptiles, birds, and mammals of all shapes and sizes.

In addition to our physical location, we also offer mobile animal programs, visiting birthday parties, schools, summer camps, and more!

All of our presentations are geared towards a fun, educational experience, with the goal of all guests having hands-on encounters with our animals.

Head Zookeeper: Drew Schulz

Drew Schulz, the owner and proprietor of The Learning Zoo, has been involved with animals for most of his life. For over a decade, he has worked with animals, given presentations, taught classes, and brought wildlife into people’s lives. He holds a BA in History and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, and an Associate of Science degree in Zoo Animal Technology from the prestigious Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo, in Gainesville, Florida, the only school in the world dedicated to training zookeepers in a 10-acre working zoo accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

After completing his degree in Florida, Drew worked a variety of animal jobs, including a keeper at a wolf sanctuary and as an alligator trainer. He finally decided to start his own zoo as a way to bring wildlife and nature closer to his community.

Event Coordinator: Rebekah

1st grade teacher, Zookeeper Drew's wife, and most importantly... Coco's mom!

Inspiring others to leave the world a better place than they found it through kindness, generosity, and growth is one of her biggest goals. Bekah’s favorite animal at The Learning Zoo is Valentina the bearded dragon. Bearded dragons are usually very docile and calm which makes them a great beginner reptile for kids to hold when transitioning from furry to scaly friends.

She is excited to head up our birthday party and events programs and see The Learning Zoo expand in many ways to serve the families of the community.

Dr. Schulz oversees our classes and workshops and serves as our Zoo Photographer.  With a background in education spanning over 30 years, she has experience in teaching both homeschool and college students at a variety of colleges.  Her education includes a BA in Legal Studies from the University of California, Berkeley; a MA Ed in Adult and Continuing Education; and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction.

With the opportunity to teach and design curriculum, she especially enjoyed the role of homeschool mom and branched out to work as a professional photographer and photography teacher after completing the New York Institute of Photography’s Professional Photographer training.

Senior Keeper: Starr

SuperStarr has always had an interest in animals since a very young age. She decided to pursue this interest at Tarleton State University where she graduated with honors obtaining a bachelor degree in Animal Science. During school, her interest lead to volunteering for a colt studies where she fell in love with horses. Helping to train, maintain, examine, and ride the colts. After graduating, she found an opportunity at The Learning Zoo where she was able to do a nutrition analysis for a selection of animals. The internship turned into a job where she cares for the animals.

Starr enjoys teaching everyone about the exciting animals at the zoo. She hopes to continue to teach and shows everyone how amazing and unique animals are. Starr continues to thirst for knowledge and gain experience with The Learning Zoo.
